Rideshare Sexual Abuse
Rideshare services have revolutionized transportation, offering convenient alternatives to traditional taxis and public transit. However, with the popularity of these services and a lack of proper safety measures by rideshare companies, passenger and driver safety have become a major concern.
One significant problem that continues across the country is the sexual assault of users of Uber, Lyft, and other rideshare apps. This includes sexual assault of passengers by the drivers employed by these companies as well as sexual assault of drivers by passengers. In December 2019, Uber reported almost 6,000 reports of sexual assaults that occurred between 2017-2018 alone, including hundreds of rapes. Lyft followed with its own Community Safety Report in October 2021 and reported the company had received 4,158 reports of sexual assault from 2017 to 2019, including several hundred rapes.
While rideshare companies claim to have implemented safety measures, incidents of sexual assault continue to occur at alarming rates. Hundreds of individuals have filed lawsuits against Uber, Lyft, and other rideshare service providers for alleged sexual assault. In October 2023, a federal panel consolidated many of these cases into a multidistrict litigation (MDL) in the Northern District of California.
For individuals who have experienced sexual assault during a rideshare or as a result of using a rideshare service, seeking legal counsel is crucial in order to understand your rights and explore avenues for legal recourse. In such cases, it is essential to consult with an experienced attorney who specializes in rideshare-related matters.
At The Simpson Tuegel Law Firm, we can assist survivors in pursuing legal action against both the perpetrator and the rideshare company if negligence or inadequate safety measures contributed to the assault. We can help survivors navigate the legal complexities surrounding these incidents, including gathering evidence and pursuing compensation for damages. It is essential to hold those responsible for sexual assault accountable and ensure that appropriate safety measures are in place to prevent such incidents in the future.
